What the landfill takes
Three places, three different rules for what they’ll take.
Convenience centers (10 locations): household bagged trash and loose recycling only, free for county residents. Also takes used motor oil, batteries, and compact fluorescent bulbs. No construction debris, no commercial waste, no brush.
Materials Recovery Facility (Clyde): bagged household waste, loose recycling, bulky waste, used tires, scrap metal, and fluorescent bulbs/tubes — plus small commercial loads, weighed and charged by the pound. No brush here.
White Oak Landfill (off I-40, mile marker 15): residential and commercial waste, wood waste, and brush — fees based on weight. No recyclables.
Household hazardous waste (paints, pesticides, gasoline, cleaning chemicals): not taken daily — the county runs periodic collection events instead, announced on its events page. Water-based paint is the exception: dry it out with kitty litter or sand, then it’s just household trash.
Asbestos: accepted at White Oak Landfill only, by appointment, with documentation.

Convenience centers 7:00 AM–5:00 PM on their open days (each center closes one or two weekdays plus Sunday; the dump hours page lists all ten). MRF Monday–Saturday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM. White Oak Landfill Monday–Saturday 7:30 AM–3:30 PM. All sites closed Sunday and on six holidays.
Materials Recovery Facility: 278 Recycle Road, Clyde, NC 28721. White Oak Landfill: 3898 Fines Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.
The program runs 10 collection "convenience" centers plus the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and White Oak Landfill (WOLF), operated through two public-private partnerships (Consolidated Waste Services runs the centers/MRF; Republic Services runs WOLF). The ten centers share the MRF's phone number. Every site's address and days are on the county's Facilities directory (Solid Waste Facilities type) and on the one-page image the county posts on its facilities-locations page; the dump hours page on this site lists them all.
